Some info about Jay.. As a Mixer.. As a mixer Jay is often hired to bring more impact to a song - bringing material together in a cohesive way that engages the listener and presents the artists work how they'd envisioned it. Frequently, he's brought on to mix projects to get a fresh perspective, when the artists and producers can't tell 'the forest from the trees'. The thousands of hours he's spent behind world class equipment and in a world class listening environment allow him to mix songs to their maximum potential - consistently delivering professional results. Jay currently mixes out of his home in a hybrid analog/digital environment which allows him the great tone that analog has to offer, along with the control and recallability of digital. When a studio is needed he prefers to work out of Liverpool Court studios in Ottawa because the staff, outboard gear, monitoring and vibe are all great. As a producer... As a producer he's laid back and easy going, offering direction when needed but not micro-managing or trying to put a huge imprint of his own on the music. Ideally, Jay is co-producing with the artist, becoming an extra member of the band during the record making process - filling the gaps where needed. His extensive experience in the studio allows him to maintain a productive and creative flow for the artist(s) throughout the process. Having spent time as a studio owner, Jay is able to budget time and money properly so the artist can worry about the more important stuff - the music. He's worked as a producer with numerous artists and labels to deliver records on time and on budget, and most importantly, records everyone is proud of. Jay won't take a on projects where he feels he can't fulfil a need the artist has. Although Jay will track and mix projects for just about any genre he will only work in a production role in certain musical genre's - if you're looking for a producer get in touch with him, if he's not the right person for the job he can probably point you in the direction of someone that is.
As an engineer... As an engineer Jay tries to be almost invisible to the project. He works hard to get exciting 'tones' effeciently - so the creative energy of sessions doesn't drown in technical details. His aim is to have the artist walk back into the control room and be inspired and motivated by the playback of themselves emminating from the speakers. Jay's tracking work has been praised by internationally recognized producers and mix engineers.
